When the narrative demands that a conflict cannot be resolved with a single decisive action it is a Challenge. Challenges come in a variety of types and level of difficulty. How to resolve a Challenge is up to the Heroes to decide and success is never certain. Heroes may face several different Challenges at the same time.
Generally speaking every Challenge may be overcome by the Heroes successfully completing a number of Moves, taken to address the challenge, equal to the Difficulty of the Challenge. The level of Difficulty is noted by the Narrator as a number ranging from 0 through 5. The narrator will keep track of the Successes towards the Completion of the Challenge and any Failures that may lead to defeat.
Even if a Player makes a Successful Roll, a Move is not counted as Successful if the Narrative does not allow for the intended outcome.
A Challenges difficulty is set by the Antagonist or Hazard of the highest Threat involved in the conflict. When there is no clear Antagonist or Hazard involved the Difficulty is set to 3.
After three failures the next failed Move in a challenge will allow the Narrator to describe how the Challenge has been failed. After completing a number of Successful moves, equal to the Challenge Difficulty, the next Successful Move will allow the Narrator and the Player to describe the successful outcome of the Challenge.
Heroes may face Multiple Challenges in a given scene. Successes and Failures may count towards multiple Challenges. If a Challenge should end without resolution, and a new scene begins, a further continuation of a Challenge will be treated as a brand new Challenge.
Some example Challenges include:
Challenge Of Escape
Challenge Of Hot Pursuit
Challenge Of Investigation
Challenge Of Competition
Challenge Of Compelling
Challenge of Assembly
Challenge of Dismantling
Challenge of Enigmas
Challenge of Infiltration
Challenge Of Combat
Combat Challenges work slightly different than other Challenges. Each foe present in a scene is their own Challenge and Challenge Difficulty rating based on their Threat Level. There is no need to count failed moves, only Successes. A Challenge of Combat ends when the heroes Successfully defeat the Antagonist (like other Challenges), when participants give up, escape, or when the Heroes have been Injured/Debilitated/Manipulated/Impeded into submission themselves. It is possible to accumulate Successes for a Challenge of Combat through Moves that do not result in direct Harm of the foe (e.g. Sussing out a weakness, upsetting their concentration with witty banter), but a Challenge Of Combat may only end successfully with a Move that Harms, Debilitates, Impedes or Manipulates the foe.
