Time & Scenes

Time

Time, in The Narrative, is abstracted. Time for the Heroes may be passing much quicker or slower than the time it takes for the Players to play the game. The Narrator will tell you how long things take in The Narrative, when time is an issue.

Scenes & Transitions

Gameplay is divided into “Scenes”. A session of gameplay is generally divided into several Scenes, but can consist of a single Scene. A Scene consists of the Narrator describing the initial setting of the Scene for the Players, the Players describing what their Heroes do from moment to moment and the Narrator responding with the results of those actions.

A Narrator can declare the beginning of a new Scene whenever they wish, but generally a new Scene occurs when things are being described to happen over a lengthier period of time (i.e. the heroes are resting and recovering from injury) or when there is a complete change in scenery (i.e. the heroes have stepped through an inter dimensional teleporter to an alien world).

These descriptions of time passing or complete changes of scenery, and no conflict is occurring, are “Transitions”. Transitions are meant to briefly provide context and flavor for the Scene that follows. Players may wish to clarify or elaborate on a Transition, leading to conflict, starting a Scene.
